Coach Kevin's Confessions

Why did you decide to start coaching entrepreneurs?
Three reasons. First, I love the personality of entrepreneurs because usually they have a real drive and passion to make the most of their life, which makes it both challenging and rewarding for me to coach.

Second, after leaving the advertising industry, I started doing marketing consulting for entrepreneurs. We would come up with excellent plans on what they needed to do in their business, but when I came back three months later, they hadn’t followed through on the plans. They knew what they needed to do, but they hadn’t taken any action.

At the same time, I discovered this concept called coaching and realized that there was a huge need in the market for a results-oriented business coach for entrepreneurs and business leaders that had to overcome challenges or capitalize on opportunities, but had difficulty following through.

And finally, when I was eight years old I sold painted rocks and tadpoles that I caught in the ditch. I am really an entrepreneur at heart and I was destined to create my own business.

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
I am a guy who really goes for all the things that I dream about, one by one. I live my life according to a belief that we don’t know how long we have on this planet. I just want to make it the best life possible.

Who is your greatest inspiration?
The underdogs that have done really well; all the average Joes and Janes that are living out their dreams in business and having a great time, and also having a fantastic life to go with it. I am also inspired by my family and friends. They inspire me to have fun, go for the things I want, and live an amazing quality of life.

If you could meet anyone, who would it be?
Madonna. I like her music, but more than that – she really makes things happen in her life. She continues to reinvent herself and has stayed at the top of her game for decades.

I would also like to meet Dale Chihouly, a well-known, highly regarded glass blower. He is blind in one eye and can’t see to blow glass, so he creates his amazing glass sculptures with a team of people. He is an underdog who made it big. I love his work!

Favorite vacation spot?
Any place I’m in nature or where I’m on or near the water.

What is the best part of your day?
I love all parts of my day. Whether it’s getting up to exercise, do yoga or go to the gym; the work I do with clients; or the time I spend with my family and friends.

What are the biggest risks you’ve taken?
In college it was speaking in front of a group of 200 students after someone suggested that I become class president. At that time, I was petrified of speaking in public, but I had to because I was nominated. When I gave my speech, my leg was shaking so bad that I had to pretend I was tapping it on the floor. I’ve overcome this fear and now I love speaking in front large audiences.

More recently, it was when I took up racing. I was using my street car when I was taking my race drivers’ training at the race track. I was told that it was very risky and they recommended that I rent a race car for the course because there were a lot of unskilled, testosterone-filled people who were learning how to race at high speeds. I didn’t think it would be a big deal; until in one of the practice sessions, the guy in front of me put his brand new car into the concrete wall. Ouch!

Best advice you’ve received?
‘Go for it,’ which is what my Mom said to me all the time when I was a kid.

Favorite quality about entrepreneurs?
Their passion and drive to get big, crazy things done.

What are your top three priorities for 2006, in life and in business?
In life, (I have it written down of course!), my goal is to have more adventures and experiences with my family and friends; whether it’s having friends over to make dinner and play games, checking out a new nature trail with my wife and kids, going to the NASCAR races with my Dad, or learning how to ride a new trail or obstacle on my dirt bike or mountain bike.

In business, to attract another handful of exciting entrepreneurial clients who really need my help to breakthrough some major obstacles that drive them nuts.
