Work with Only A-mazing People
Why tolerate less than A players? It’s your company; you have created a business environment that matches your personal style and ambitions; now you need to make sure that you have the right employees in the right roles. And if you believe you don’t have the right employees, you have two choices.
First, you can communicate your expectations for success and give employees the chance to meet the bar. Often, an entrepreneur’s expectation of what they want is not clear. You may think your expectations are clear, but did you put them in writing? Were they backed up by data, followed up, measured and reviewed regularly? The truth is that a lot of people think they are clear but they are not. In reality, what happens is that many employees operate at a C+ level and think they are an A; or they think that they are a C+, but in actual fact, are an A. You have to set your expectations, communicate them, and measure and follow up. People need to know how they are doing and how they can improve.
And second, if employees are not able to meet the bar, inevitably they will need to go. People make hiring mistakes all the time. Entrepreneurs need to hire people based on how potential employees will perform on the job, and use expert help and personality profiles to guide those decisions. This applies to your customers too. What attributes do your ideal customers have? What attracted them to do business with you? Use this insight to help you attract similar customers.
